Uclers + coffee = pain.
This lesson is one I've learned the hard way and I have been off coffee for a good while now. (Several surgeries for ulcer repair will convince anyone to avoid the stuff!) I love me some tea and the change hasn't been horrible....but sometimes I miss the flavor of coffee. Once in a while I try some, but it isn't worth the acid it causes in my sensitive tummy. So I avoid it.
We've been slowly transitioning to include more raw, vibrant foods into our diet. One amazing superfood that we have wanted to incorporate into our diet is Maca. Maca is an adaptogen, which is a
substance that raises the non-specific resistance in an organism and enables the body to enhance its power of resistance
and adapt to external conditions. They work with the
body's natural rhythms to help rebuild weak immune systems,
re-mineralize poorly nourished bodies, and increase energy and
endurance. (This info is taken from the previously cited site.) It helps balance hormones, too. It's good stuff, to say the least!
In typical 'more must be better' fashion, I added about 1/4c to a smoothie to try it out. YUCK! The taste was far too malty, too strong for me. I offered some to D and he decided that nope, Maca is not for us. Fast forward to a moment of open mindedness and I decided to try finding a recipe that would allow us to 'learn to like it'. I found several smoothie recipes on the 'net, and synthesized a few into something that sounded good.
The result? Delicious! We now enjoy this almost every morning. Seriously - it's like Superfood Starbucks in my own kitchen....and we're not spending over $4.00 (apiece!) for our icy morning fix. What could be better?
Here's the recipe. Follow it loosely and tailor it to your preferences. :)
1c almond milk
1 frozen banana
1T maca
2-3T raw cacao
ice
cinnamon
Blend it all up and enjoy!
