Madelyn loves her boys. She stares at them, grabs them, pats their fur, babbles at them, and is just fascinated in general with them. They're rather fond of her too, in their own ways. Levi will snuggle near her when she's in the bed with me....he's supervised, of course. He'll sometimes whine and cry when she fusses. He even lets her kick his head when he's sneaking up toward her to snuggle. Which doesn't say much for how smart he is, but that's another matter entirely. This is, after all, the pup who once ate a wasp's nest.
Dude, on the other hand, has been somewhat standoffish. I am surprised. I thought Levi would run away and hide, his poor broken brain unable to process this new arrival. Dude I thought would take it in stride and welcome her into his fold, making it his personal business to take care of her. Apparently I was wrong. While Dude doesn't do anything threatening towards her, he also doesn't really engage her. Or hasn't until now. He's tried to ignore her for the most part. I think he's jealous, because he has always been 'my firstborn'. He knows he's my special special. Now there's a new special special, and he's not sure where that puts him!
Last week Maddy was sitting in her Bumbo pretending to watch me clean the kitchen while planning her not-so-hostile takeover involving smiles and spitty bubbles.
Dude decided the time was right to have a little talk with her. He sniffed out her intentions and deemed them acceptable. Of course, Maddy had something to say about the matter too.
They conversed for several minutes before he kissed her on the nose, ending the discussion in a most friendly manner.
They both watched me after that, plotting and scheming all sorts of plans which included lots of snuggle time, tickles, and some good ear scratching. I think the latter was all Dude's idea.
P.S. Yes that is a handknit sweater. :)
